Program Description

Program Overview: EMU’s exchange program with Giessen enables undergraduate students to take classes for a semester or academic year at the university along with German students. As an exchange student, you may elect to join student organizations and participate on various excursions hosted by the university.


Graduate Students: All interested graduate students need to contact the program advisor BEFORE applying.

Application Requirements: Exchange programs require two tiers of approvals. Once you have been approved, you may be contacted by the APA office via e-mail regarding submission of a partner application. Partner applications are due within one week of student's e-mail notification. Participation in the program is contingent upon the approval of both EMU and the partner school.

Advising: All applicants must attend a mandatory advising session.

Language of Instruction: German and English coursework

Credits: 14 – 19 per term

Eligibility: At least sophomore standing with a minimum 3.0 GPA at the time of application. Prior German language knowledge is not required, but highly recommended.

German Majors: This program fulfills GERN 490 requirements, and are required to take at least three courses in German.

Courses: Giessen offers a range of degree courses in the fields of law, business and economics, the natural sciences, the social sciences and the humanities. All coursework may be applied to your academic major, minor, or general education requirements with approval from the appropriate department. Reviews course options.

Housing: Students are guaranteed a place in a student hall of residence which you will apply for during the application procedures to Giessen. Students usually get a single fully furnished room, but will need to bring or purchase their own bed linen, towels, and kitchen utensils. Kitchen and bathroom is usually shared.

Visa: Nationals of the Unites States are not required to have a visa upon entry into Germany, but will need to apply for a residence title after arrival. Giessen will assist exchange students in this process.

Orientation: An orientation meeting will take place to prepare for your study abroad experience the semester before departure. On-site orientation at Giessen will take place before the beginning of the semester.
