OVERVIEW The Japan Center for Michigan Universities (JCMU) is a study abroad program, a product of the strong sister-state relationship between the State of Michigan and Shiga Prefecture. It is located on the shore of Lake Biwa in the City of Hikone, Shiga Prefecture, Japan. Our programs are dedicated to building relationships between Japanese, Americans, and other nationalities through active learning and participation in language, culture, family life and society. JCMU has been welcoming students of all majors since 1989. Students do not need to attend a member university to participate. ACADEMICS The SUMMER language & Culture program offers four levels of intensive Japanese language instruction for 10 semester credit hours. Other SUMMER programs include: Religions Contemporary Politics Digital Photography and Video International Business LODGING The Japan Center for Michigan Universities offers students the opportunity to live with a Japanese family in a homestay or at the Center with other students. Students may also choose to live in the center during the week and participate in weekend homestays with a family. The program includes weekend excursions to sites of cultural and aesthetic importance in Japan, and experiential learning such as; demonstration and participation in the arts of calligraphy and flower arranging and the tea ceremony.
