Program Overview: EMU's exchange program with Tokyo Gakugei offers undergraduate students the opportunity to take classes for a semester or academic year at the university alongside other international and Japanese students. As an exchange student, you may also elect to participate in cultural activities on campus and join clubs or circles. Graduate Students: All interested graduate students need to contact the program advisor BEFORE applying. General Program: Offers you the ability to take university courses conducted in Japanese as well as having access to ISEP, and Japanese Language courses. ISEP courses are conducted in English and look at diverse perspectives of Japan through various academic fields in humanities, the social sciences, and the natural sciences. Application Requirements: Exchange programs require two tiers of approvals. Once you have been approved, you may be contacted by the APA office via e-mail regarding submission of a partner application. Partner applications are due within one week of student's e-mail notification. Participation in the program is contingent upon the approval of both EMU and the partner school. Advising: All applicants must attend a mandatory advising session prior to approval. Language of Instruction: Intensive Japanese and English Credits: 14–18 per term Eligibility: At least sophomore standing with a minimum 3.0 GPA at the time of application. General Program is open to Japanese Language and Culture Majors Only. Japanese Majors: This program fulfills the JPNE 490 requirement. All JPNE Majors are required to take 3 minimum courses of Japanese Language courses. Housing: Tokyo Gakugei exchange students are placed in fully furnished dormitories either single or shared rooms. Each dormitory has a Residential Assistant to support foreign residents. Visa Requirements: Upon acceptance to the program, you must apply for a student visa. A certificate of eligibility is required for the application and will be provided by Tokyo Gakugei. You may need to provide documentation of financial support for visa eligibility. Orientation: An orientation meeting at EMU will take place to prepare you for your study abroad experience the semester before departure. On-site orientation at Tokyo Gakugei takes place before the beginning of the semester.
